Professional Update Seminars

The CIMCIGS professional update seminars continued in March with a briefing from the Scottish Futures Trust (SFT).

The SFT will play a crucial role in the procurement of a range of projects in Scotland including the new schools investment programme and the hub programme.

This seminar provided CIMCIGS members and their guests a great opportunity to hear about the SFT’s role in the procurement of significant infrastructure projects.

Colin Proctor

Colin joined SFT in December 2009 as Accommodation Director. Colin is a chartered surveyor and most recently was a Partner in a large international construction consultancy practice. He has over 20 years experience of working in the construction and property development market, advising on major projects and programmes across the UK and Ireland in a wide range of sectors.

Claire Blake

Claire joined SFT in October 2009 as associate director in the accommodation team with a current focus on hub delivery. Previously she was a lawyer with Shepherd and Wedderburn LLP specialising in public procurement and projects across a range of sectors.

Vice Chair: Jody Fitchet, Pinsent Masons

Jody is a senior business development executive with responsibility for the Scottish offices of international law firm Pinsent Masons. For the past decade, Jody has specialised in developing the communications and marketing skills in the legal sector. He is a member of the Law Society of Scotland’s Communications Workgroup and the Chartered Institute of Public Relations.

Treasurer: Claire Valentine, Bell Building Projects

Claire is Business Development Manager for Bell Building Projects with responsibility for sourcing and maximising business opportunities throughout Scotland. Claire has nearly 15 years experience of marketing and business development within both the civil engineering and building contracting sector. She holds a Business Degree, the CIM Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing and is a full member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

Susan is a chartered marketer, responsible for client relationship development and strategic business planning within WSP, a global firm of engineering consultants. Her key skills include implementation of business plans to create new opportunities, satisfy stakeholders and maximise revenue. In addition to her marketing experience, Susan has an honors degree in civil engineering.

Committee Member: Laura Burgess, Kier Scotland

Laura is Proposals Manager at Kier Scotland, based in Stepps.  In the last 2 decades, Laura’s career has been focussed on marketing and business development in the construction, defence and engineering sectors.  Laura has been an active member of the CIMCIGS committee for the last 7 years.

Laura has a CIM Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing and is a full member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and an Associate Member of Chartered Institute of Public Relations.

Committee Member: Stacey Cassidy, Pinsent Masons

Stacey is an associate with, Pinsent Masons, the international law firm with offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh.  Stacey specialises in construction law and is dual qualified in English and Scottish law.  Stacey’s experience includes providing advice on all aspects of transactional construction law – through procurement to completion, including all aspects of construction due diligence in real estate transactions.

Committee Member: Bill Tait, Clansman Interiors

Bill has been Sales Manager at Clansman Interiors Ltd for the past four and a half years. His remit is to develop the sales and marketing of this well known and established Interiors Refurbishment and Fit-Out Contractor. Bill’s previous positions were 10 years with SAS International and 3 years with Burgess Architectural Products as their Technical Specification Sales Manager for their various suspended metal ceiling systems.

Speaker: Dr Serge Younes, WSP
The talk will present the scale of opportunities in the UK for developer, asset owners (property and land) and investors for on-site renewable energy generation in the UK, looking in particular at the idea of the solar roofs concept developed by WSP and currently being deployed across Europe in the context of financial returns on renewable development, earnings from land or roof rents and potential CRC mitigation.

The talk will provide a brief summary of Designing Streets, a key new policy and guidance document that is due to be launched this Spring by the Scottish Government, developed by a team of consultants, led by WSP. Keith will emphasise the key benefits of the new approaches to street design for the development sector and how they take forward wider sustainability and health agendas. This will include landtake, potential savings in infrastructure investment and integrated approaches to SUDS
